About Us:
History of MHAST
The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization established in 1927, affiliated with the New Your State and National Mental Health Association’s and one of 340 Mental Health Associations nationwide.
Our organization is devoted to enhancing the lives of all community residents by improving their mental health and wellness. Our goals are achieved through advocacy services, educational presentations, prevention programs, information and resource referrals.
Mental illness affects one in four American families. An estimated 27 million adults and 7.5 million children and youth in our nation have been diagnosed with a mental illness, outnumbering those with cancer, heart, and lung disease combined.
Despite an encouraging rate of success in treating those with mental illnesses, only one in five people actually seek professional help for mental or emotional problems. They lack information to help them recognize and understand the signs and symptoms of mental illness and are unaware and confused about available treatment.
The Mental Health Associations of the Southern Tier, Inc. helps to unite recipients of mental health services and their families with mental health professionals, service providers and advocates to create collaborations, generate action, and combat the devastating stigma of mental illness.
