Advocacy
The MHAST's Advocacy Program is designed to protect the rights of individuals dealing with the effects of mental illness. This is done either through the legislative process or on an individual basis. The Advocacy Program encourages and promotes self-help and peer support. These services help to empower recipients to become self-directed and to maintain a healthy recovery process.
The Advocacy Program utilizes walk-in hours, meetings and presentation to provide opportunities and give information to consumers and recipients. They also promote the development of needed services that are currently unavailable.
Self Empowerment is not a one-time event; it is a process that takes time and commitment. Empowerment encompasses many different attributes including having a vision, committing to a goal, having a positive attitude and being assertive. It is our desire to aid recipients in this process as they reclaim their lives, confidence and develop an increased ability to manage their decisions.
The Advocacy Department is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of recipients by aiding them in their personal struggle against stigma. Peer Advocates help recipients to realize their personal strengths, which allows them to succeed. Assistance is also available in immediate and long-term goals such as financial stability, housing issues and further education.
