SHIP

Self-Help Independence Project

To encourage and promote individual empowerment and to raise community awareness of mental health issues.






...offers a continuum of programming and self-help services designed to provide educational and experiential opportunities for consumers who wish to become active participants in their own self-directed recovery.

Events and activities are diverse, open to consumer input, and offer innovative approaches to the self-help model.

Winner of the 2003 Mental Health Association of New York Ken Steele Memorial Award for Program Excellence.

Programs
WELLNESS TAKES WORK

is a weekly peer-run support group that is open to new members of both genders at all times. Participants decide on the agenda and priorities of each meeting. Please call for meeting time.

CREATIVE WRITERS GROUP

is a weekly peer-run writers workshop. Contributions from the group are published in the SHIP arts and literary magazine, Explorations. Please call for meeting time.

FUNDAMENTAL FOLLIES THEATRE COMPANY

presents an original musical each year. Consumers and MHAST staff work together to create and perform stage productions using humor and music to dramatize, satirize, and destigmatize mental health issues. Please call for production schedule.


SPEAKERS BUREAU

provides training in public speaking for consumers interested in presenting their "story" to the public. Speaking venues are arranged by SHIP staff and include colleges, service clubs, and human service agencies. Meeting time: Scheduled as needed.

DRAGON MASTERS

is a peer facilitated antistigma workshop. An imaginative and interactive agenda assists consumers in acquiring skills to foster self-advocacy and empowerment

THE SHIP CONFERENCE

is an annual event open to all community consumers and human service professionals. Conference themes are varied and speakers represent both provider and consumer perspectives.
